Overview

About tv unit with storage

The living room is usually the storage-poorest room in a Mumbai flat, and the TV wall is the largest uninterrupted surface in it. Using it properly is worth more than using it decoratively.

What works is drawers — deep, soft-close, at a height you can reach without crouching. What does not work is the grid of open cubbies that appears in most renderings. They look good empty, which is the only state they are ever photographed in.

Answers

TV Unit with Storage — questions

Open shelves or closed drawers?

Drawers, for anything you use. Open shelving in a Mumbai living room collects dust at a rate that makes it a weekly chore, and the grid of small cubbies that looks good in a rendering is only ever photographed empty. We usually specify mostly drawers with one or two open bays for display.

How do I keep the remote working with devices behind a shutter?

Either a glass or acrylic shutter that passes infrared, or an IR repeater with the receiver mounted outside the bay. Both work. The thing that does not work is a solid shutter and hoping — which is what gets built when it is not planned.

How deep should the unit be?

450 to 500 mm for drawers that hold something useful. Shallower than 400 mm and the drawers stop being practical for anything but remotes and cables. Deeper than 500 mm and the unit starts to intrude on a small living room.
