Overview

About island modular kitchen

An island adds prep surface, a social focus and storage on two sides. In an open-plan layout with genuine floor area it transforms how the kitchen is used.

It needs roughly 1,000 mm clear on every side to function, which means the room has to be about 3,600 mm wide before an island is even possible. If you want a sink or hob in the island, plumbing and ducting have to reach the middle of the floor — in an existing flat that usually means a raised plinth or a dropped slab, and that is a decision to take with full information.

Answers

Island Modular Kitchen — questions

Can I have an island in a Mumbai flat?

Only if the kitchen is around 3,600 mm wide or more, because an island needs 1,000 mm clear on every side. Most Mumbai kitchens are not. We measure at the site visit and tell you plainly — an island squeezed into a room that cannot take it makes the kitchen worse, not better.

Can the hob go in the island?

Technically yes, and it requires ducting to an external wall for the chimney, which means either a dropped ceiling run or an island chimney with a long duct. A recirculating island chimney is the usual fallback and it does not clear Indian cooking adequately. We would rather put the hob on the wall run and keep the island for prep.

What about a sink in the island?

It needs supply and drainage routed through the floor, which in an existing flat means a raised plinth of 100 to 150 mm to carry the waste with fall. That plinth is visible and it changes how the island sits in the room. Worth knowing before it is designed in.
