Light it in layers
Large living rooms look flat under a grid of downlights. Combine a soft cove or concealed perimeter light, a few precise accent lights on art and walls, decorative pendants or a chandelier over the seating, and floor and table lamps. Put them on scenes, so one button sets the room for an evening or a party. See home automation.
A feature wall that earns its place
- Book-matched marble or large porcelain slabs.
- Fluted wood or veneer panelling with integrated light.
- A TV wall where the screen, speakers and cables disappear into the panelling.
Bespoke furniture and proportion
In a large room, off-the-shelf furniture often looks small. Custom sofas, consoles and a dining table scaled to the room make it feel complete. Leave generous circulation and avoid filling every corner.
Ceiling and acoustics
Hard surfaces such as stone floors and glass echo. Upholstery, rugs, curtains and acoustic panels hidden in the ceiling or wall panelling keep conversation comfortable. A well-designed false ceiling can carry lighting, curtains tracks and AC without visible clutter.
Sea-facing living rooms
Orient seating to the view, control glare with sheer and blackout layers on motorised tracks, and choose finishes that resist salt air.
