About u-shaped modular kitchen
Three runs means the most counter and the most storage you can get into a given footprint, with everything within a step. Where the room allows it, it is the most efficient kitchen to work in.
It needs width. Below 2,400 mm between the opposing runs, two people cannot pass, and opening a base drawer blocks the run behind you. It also doubles the corner problem — two dead corners, both needing a mechanism to be usable.

U-Shaped Modular Kitchen — questions
How much width does a U-shaped kitchen need?
At least 2,400 mm between the opposing runs. Below that, opening a base drawer blocks the run behind you and two people cannot pass. If your kitchen is narrower, an L-shape with a tall unit run will store more comfortably than a cramped U.
Is a U-shape worth it for the extra cost?
It costs more because there is more of everything, including two corner mechanisms instead of one. If you cook daily and have the width, the reduction in walking is genuine. If the kitchen is used lightly, the money is better spent on the carcass grade and the hardware.
Where do the tall units go?
At the open ends of the U, not in the middle of a run. A tall unit mid-run blocks light and breaks the counter into two short unusable sections. At the end it closes the kitchen visually and keeps the working counter continuous.
