TV Unit Design & Build in Mumbai
Most TV units are designed around the television. The ones that still work in five years were designed around the cables.

What tv unit design actually involves
A TV unit is the one piece of furniture in the living room that everybody looks at and nobody plans properly. The panel gets designed as a visual element — fluted, backlit, stone-clad — and the practical questions get answered afterwards, on site, with a hole saw.
The result is familiar: a set-top box with nowhere to sit, a router pushed behind the panel where it overheats and drops signal, and a power board you can only reach by lifting the whole unit away from the wall. None of that is a finish problem. It is a planning problem, and it costs nothing to get right if it is decided before the panel is built.
Our approach
We start from the equipment list — TV size, set-top box, soundbar, console, router, and how many of them need line of sight to a remote. The panel is then built with a 50 mm service gap behind it, vertical conduits at both ends, and a removable access section at power-point height. Ventilation slots go above and below any closed compartment holding an active device. Only once that is fixed do we design the face.
Common problems we are called for
- Router pushed into a sealed compartment, overheating and dropping Wi-Fi every evening
- Set-top box behind a solid shutter, so the remote has to be pointed at an angle through a gap
- Power board inaccessible without pulling the unit off the wall
- Wall-mount bracket fixed into a 4-inch partition wall that was never going to carry it
- Backlit panel wired to a switch nobody can reach, so the lighting goes unused
What you get from doing this properly
Cables planned first
Equipment list before design. Conduits, service gap and access panel built in, not drilled in.
Devices that stay cool
Ventilation above and below every closed compartment with an active device in it.
Wall checked before mounting
We confirm whether it is RCC, brick or a 4-inch partition before specifying the bracket.
Storage that is usable
Drawers at the right height, not decorative cubbies you will never fill twice.
How we run a tv unit design project
Free site visit
Wall measured and sounded to identify RCC, brick or partition. Existing points mapped.
Equipment and cable plan
We list every device that will live there and plan conduit routes before anything is drawn.
3D concept
You see the elevation in context with the sofa line and the viewing height marked.
Itemised quotation
Carcass, finish, lighting, hardware and electrical work each priced separately.
Electrical first fix
Conduits, additional points and backlight wiring completed and tested before carpentry.
Build, install and dress
Unit installed, devices placed, cables routed and the remote tested from the sofa.
What goes into the specification
We name every material by type and grade in the quotation, and hand over documentation at completion. No unbranded line items.
A full wall panel is often not worth it
A floor-standing unit with a well-detailed back panel behind the television gives you most of the visual effect at roughly half the cost of a floor-to-ceiling feature wall, and it does not commit you to a layout. If you may move the sofa, or you rent, the smaller unit is the better decision. We will say so at the site visit rather than quoting the larger one by default.
TV Unit Design services we provide
Modern TV Unit
A floating unit looks lighter. It also has to carry its whole load through the wall behind it.

Before anything else, we find out what your wall is made of. Half of Mumbai's living room walls will not hold what gets mounted on them.

Decorative cubbies get filled once, photographed, and then collect dust. Drawers get used every day.

The right television size is set by how far away the sofa is. Most Mumbai halls get a screen too large for the room.

Almost everything sold as a wooden TV unit is veneer over plywood — which is fine, and worth knowing before you pay solid-wood prices.

In a bedroom the TV usually competes with the wardrobe for the same wall. Deciding that early saves rebuilding later.

They asked me to list every device before they drew anything, which no one else did. The router sits in a vented compartment and the Wi-Fi stopped dropping. That was not even something I had connected to the furniture.
Rohit Malhotra2BHK, ChemburTV Unit Design — frequently asked questions
What height should the TV be mounted at?
Centre of the screen roughly at eye level when seated — for most sofas that puts the centre at 42 to 48 inches from the floor. Mounting it high above a console, which is still common, means looking up for two hours at a time. We mark the height on the wall during the site visit so you can sit down and check it before anything is built.
Can you build around an existing air conditioner or window?
Yes, and in Mumbai flats this is the norm rather than the exception. The constraint is usually the AC drain line and the swing of a window shutter. We note both at the site visit and design the panel to keep them accessible — a panel that blocks an AC service point will have to be cut open eventually.
How long does a TV unit take?
Typically 12 to 18 days from measurement to installation, including any electrical first fix. Installation itself is one day. If the design includes a stone or fluted feature wall, add about a week for material lead time.
Is a wall-mounted unit safe on a partition wall?
Not without reinforcement. Many Mumbai flats have 4-inch brick or block partitions that will not hold a cantilevered unit plus a television over time. We sound the wall at the site visit, and where it is a partition we either fix back to the structural slab or design the unit to take its load to the floor.
Do you handle the electrical work too?
Yes — additional points, conduits and backlight wiring are part of the scope and quoted as a separate line. It is worth keeping it with the carpentry rather than splitting it, because the conduit routes and the panel build have to be sequenced together.
