Start with what you cannot see
The most expensive bathroom failure in Mumbai is seepage, into the flat below or the wall behind. Before any finish, a luxury bathroom needs a properly waterproofed floor and wet walls, correct slopes to the drains, and plumbing that is pressure-tested before it is closed. Our bathroom waterproofing page explains the process. Nothing else on this page matters if this is skipped.
Design ideas that define a luxury bathroom
- Wet-room layout. A level-access shower with a frameless glass panel and a linear drain, so the floor runs continuously.
- Stone cladding. Book-matched marble or large-format porcelain slabs floor to ceiling, with minimal grout lines. See our Italian marble guide.
- Concealed fittings. In-wall cisterns, concealed diverters and wall-mounted basins and WCs keep surfaces clean.
- Floating vanity. A wall-hung vanity in stone or veneer with a backlit mirror cabinet.
- Bathtub or rain shower. A freestanding tub where space allows; otherwise a ceiling rain shower with a separate hand shower.
- Heated towel rails, anti-fog mirrors and niches built into the wall instead of shelves.
Lighting
Layer it: soft general light from a cove or recessed fittings, task light at the mirror at face height, and a low-level night light. Use fittings rated for wet zones, and put the shower area on its own circuit.
Materials that work in Mumbai
- Honed or textured stone and porcelain on floors, for grip.
- BWP plywood or solid-surface vanities, never MR board.
- PVD-coated or solid brass fittings that resist tarnish.
- Exhaust ventilation sized for the room, because humidity is the enemy of every finish.
Planning the budget
In a luxury bathroom, fittings and stone are the visible cost, but waterproofing, plumbing and labour for precise stone work are where quality is decided. We quote each separately so you can see where the money goes. See our bathroom renovation page for how a project runs.
