What is involved

What wardrobe design actually involves

Wardrobe quotations in Mumbai are usually compared on finish — acrylic versus laminate, matte versus gloss. That is the part you can see in a showroom, so that is the part that gets sold.

What determines whether the wardrobe is still square in eight years is the carcass material and the hardware. An 18 mm BWP 710 plywood carcass with Hettich hinges behaves very differently from a 16 mm MDF box with unbranded hardware — and in a city where the humidity sits above 70% for four months a year, MDF in a bedroom against an external wall is a genuine risk, not a theoretical one.

Our approach

We build carcasses in 18 mm BWP 710 grade plywood, edge-banded on all four sides including the hidden ones, because an unsealed edge against a damp wall is where swelling starts. Shutters are your choice of finish; hardware is Hettich or Hafele as standard, with soft-close on every hinge and drawer. Sliding systems run on top-hung tracks rather than bottom rollers, so dust and hair do not jam them. Every unit is scribed to the wall on site — Mumbai walls are rarely plumb, and a factory-square box against an out-of-plumb wall leaves a tapering gap you will see every day.

Common problems we are called for

  • Shutters that no longer close flush, usually within three years of handover
  • Swelling at the base of the carcass where an unsealed edge met a damp external wall
  • Sliding doors jumping the track because the system was bottom-rolling
  • Loft shutters so heavy they need two hands, because no gas lift was specified
  • Internal layout that ignores how the person actually stores — all hanging, no drawers, or the reverse
What you get

What you get from doing this properly

▣

Carcass named in writing

BWP 710 grade, 18 mm, all edges banded. Written into the quotation, not implied.

⚙

Branded hardware only

Hettich or Hafele hinges, channels and sliding gear, with the manufacturer's warranty.

▢

Scribed to your wall

Filler strips cut on site so there is no tapering gap against an out-of-plumb wall.

☰

Layout planned around you

We ask what you actually store before we decide hanging-to-shelf ratio.

Our process

How we run a wardrobe design project

Free site measurement

We measure the opening at three heights, check wall plumb and note beam or duct intrusions.

Storage audit

A short conversation about what goes in — saris, suits, luggage, bedding — before any layout is drawn.

3D design and layout

You see the elevation and the internal layout, with hanging, shelf and drawer split marked.

Itemised quotation

Carcass grade, shutter finish, hardware brand and internal accessories each priced separately.

Manufacture and delivery

Built in our workshop, delivered flat-packed to avoid lift and staircase damage.

Install and adjust

Scribed, levelled, hinges adjusted, and a handover check that every shutter closes flush.

Specification

What goes into the specification

We name every material by type and grade in the quotation, and hand over documentation at completion. No unbranded line items.

Carcass18 mm BWP 710 grade plywood (Century, Greenply or equivalent), all edges banded
ShuttersAcrylic, laminate, PU, membrane or veneer — each with a different cost and repair profile
HingesHettich or Hafele soft-close, 110 degree, with 10-year manufacturer warranty
Sliding systemTop-hung track, 60 to 80 kg rated per shutter, with floor guide rather than floor track
Loft shuttersGas lift fitted on anything above 600 mm height so it holds open on its own
InternalsSoft-close drawer channels, pull-out trouser rack, hanging rod at 1,050 mm for saris

Refacing is often the honest answer

If your existing carcass is sound plywood and square, replacing only the shutters and hardware costs roughly 40% of a new wardrobe and gives you the same visual result. We check the carcass at the site visit and tell you which situation you are in. If it is MDF and already swelling at the base, refacing is throwing money at a box that is failing — and we will say that too.

Client feedback

What clients say

★★★★★

We asked three firms for a sliding wardrobe quote. Only SpaceCrafta measured the wall at three heights and then explained why the gap would show if they did not. The quote was not the lowest. The wardrobe shuts properly.

Wardrobe Design — frequently asked questions

Sliding or hinged — which is better?

Hinged gives you full access to the whole opening and costs less. Sliding saves the swing space, which matters when the bed is less than 2 ft 6 in from the wardrobe — common in Mumbai bedrooms. The trade-off with sliding is that you can only ever see half the wardrobe at once, and the track adds cost. If you have the clearance, hinged is usually the better buy.

What is the difference between BWP and BWR plywood?

BWR is boiling water resistant, BWP is boiling water proof — BWP 710 is the IS 710 marine grade. For a bedroom wardrobe on an internal wall, BWR is adequate. For anything against an external wall, in a bathroom-adjacent position, or in a ground-floor flat, we specify BWP. The cost difference is small relative to replacing a swollen carcass.

How long does a wardrobe take?

Measurement to installation is typically 18 to 25 days — most of it manufacturing. On-site installation of a 8 ft wardrobe is a single day. Acrylic and PU finishes add a few days because of the curing time.

Can you work around an existing loft?

Yes, and in most Mumbai flats we recommend keeping the masonry loft and building the wardrobe up to it rather than replacing it with a plywood one. The masonry loft carries weight the plywood will not, and you keep the storage.

Do you provide a warranty?

One year on our workmanship, plus the hardware manufacturer's own warranty — Hettich and Hafele are 10 years on hinges and channels. We hand over the hardware documentation at completion so you can claim it directly if you ever need to.
